UST stays on top of UAAP men's football

University of Santo Tomas sustained its lead in the 72nd UAAP men’s football tournament after a 2-2 draw with Far Eastern University at the Ateneo field.

Nicanor Palacio tied the game at injury time to prevent a defeat for UST and the Tigers sustained their hold of first spot with 10 points on three wins and one draw.


Jason Cordova opened scoring in the 32nd minute to give FEU a 1-0 lead but Mario Clarino tied the game in the second half with a goal in the 68th minute.

FEU looked headed to victory after Jason Gustillo knocked in a goal in the 89th minute until Palacio saved the day for the Tigers.

The Tamaraws are in third place with seven points (2-1-1 win-loss-draw).

Earlier, University of the Philippines got back to winning form, beating De La Salle, 1-0, to take second place with nine points on three wins and one loss.

Stephen Permanes’ goal in the 52nd minute was enough to enable the Maroons to win and bounce back from their loss to the Tigers last Sunday.

Ateneo beat winless University of the East, 2-1, to stay in fourth place with six points (2-2-0 win-loss-draw).

UE actually lead, 1-0, on a goal by Nikko Molo but Juan Siojo tied the count in the 37th minute.

Derrick Candelaria gave the Blue Eagles the lead with a goal in the 82nd minute.

The Red Warriors have not won a game after four matches. -
