Azkal Araneta plans to retire after Suzuki Cup

MANILA, Philippines – Azkals player Ian Araneta said he plans to retire from the national team after the 2012 Suzuki Cup.
The 30-year old forward said he is calling it quits after being with the Philippine squad for 10 years.
"Ito na ang last (Suzuki Cup). After nito, retire na talaga ako sa nationals," said the Ilonggo. "This is my final hurrah talaga."
Araneta has been with the Azkals since 2002. He made his international debut in a friendly game against Singapore on December 11, 2002.
Among the highlights of his career with the Azkals was his hat trick against Macau in the 2010 Long Teng Cup. The Azkals won that game, 5-0, with Araneta ending up as the tournament's top scorer (four goals).
Araneta said he'll surely miss being with his team mates.
"Siyempre, nakakamiss pero dadalhin ko na lang ang magagandang alala-ala," he said.
However, Araneta said he will keep playing football for his club, Philippine Air Force FC, at the United Football League.
"Ganun pa rin maglalaro pa rin ng football sa club. Hindi ko talaga pwedeng iwasan ang football," said Araneta.

  1. He should just retire NOW!! Also a bit ironic that he says the Suzuki Cup is his "last hurrah". He's barely played all year, and with the lack of form he's in, he might not even see a single minute in the tournament! lol!! But good to know he'll be gone for good sooner rather than later.

The likes of Gener and Margarse should also have the decency to announce their international retirement as well... RIGHT NOW!!

Caligdong also said something back in late 2009/early 2010 that by the time he reaches 30 or so, he'll call it quits on his international career. Hopefully that's true so we could see the back of him soon and the national team can really move forward!!

caligdong is considered to be the best local player according to ilonggos. hahaha. pero bakit pag inaalis siya sa pitch, gumaganda laro ng team?

    2. LOL @ Ilonggos!! Caligdong is extremely overrated it's untrue!! A player like Christiaens should be playing instead of him but isn't! He doesn't deserve to starting anymore let alone wear the captain's armband. And what's worse is that Weiss himself thinks that Caligdong is such a great player! bleh!!!

  2. If I am in his shoes, I will not say I will retire from the NT whether I am a seldom used player or not. To play and called for the NT is surely a privelege for every footballer. It is an oppurtunity and a recognition to carry the country's flag kahit ika nga eh "bangko".
I guess he may be sour graping because not being able to play.
If I am in his shoes, i will continue to be available until the coaching staff does not call me anymore.

    1. Yes it's a privilege to get called up to the national team, but with it comes responsibility!

He's been bashed for quite some time now and rightly so. However, him announcing his international retirement after the Suzuki Cup is something you CANNOT criticize! The only thing you could question about it is, why not retire sooner such as before the Suzuki Cup.

We all know he sucks and has been for quite some time. I'm sure he himself knows that his playing time is limited and isn't seen as an important enough player to get much minutes and therefore would be the time hang up his boots.

This then begs the question... are you Gener or Margarse in disguise?!?!? LOL!!!!

eh bakit nyo idadamay buong ilonggos???palibhasa mga pulpol kayo sa football kaya ganun ang tingin....

anyways it is time for araneta to relegate his position to the younger players and so as gener and margarse. for caligdong atleast he have 1 to 2 years left....

  5. Instead of giving at least some appreciation for a man who helped and has contributed to the Nation, but here they are still bashing the guy for saying he will retire. just classic case. what have you all done that surpasses Ian's is the question you should all be asking. why can't you show even a bit of appreciation for this man's hard work and contributions? Unbelievable!

  6. In his prime, he was one of the best players of the national team. He was a starter during the historic 2010 Suzuki Cup from which the Azkals entered a new era in football. He served(s) in the military. Doesn't look for the limelight, and no controviersies on or off the field that I know of. By all accounts this is a class act!

Thank you Ian Araneta for all your contributions.

    1. One of the best in his prime? No he wasn't!!! lolz!!

Sure he was a starter in the 2010 Suzuki Cup but he did fuck all! There also wasn't anyone else to call up during that time.

So just because he wasn't in the media for negative reasons, it's all of a sudden a "class act"?? That's simply called being normal! More so since he's a military man!

Yes, he did the best he could whenever he got called up and played, but clearly his best isn't good enough internationally. His international retirement can't come quick enough but good riddance nonetheless! Here's hoping the likes of Gener, Margarse and Caligdong follow suit!

  8. we should give recognition to Ian..and don't just give negative comments against him..being in the national team is not an easy task..i think those people who's been talking negative against him are people who haven't even given their share to our country.."putak ng putak lang yan..try being in the national team para malaman mo gaano ka hirap..
