Division Two squad Cebu Queen City United spoiled the United Football League’s debut at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill in Taguig, not showing up for its game against against Dolphins United FC on Saturday.
The match, slated at 4 p.m., was supposed to be the league’s first game in the newly-built artificial pitch. UFL marketing manager Coco Torre said that the squad did not give any notice or reason prior to the no-show.
Sun.Star Cebu reported that Cebu Queen City might not suit up this season at all. The squad, which finished third in the Division Two last year, might file for a leave of absence if the UFL doesn’t grant its request of a home-and-away format for its League matches.
Cebu Queen City is requesting nine of its 18 matches to be played in Cebu, the report said, after flying back-and-forth from Cebu to Manila every week just to play its League matches last season.
Aside from helping in the promotion of the UFL in the provinces, the squad also wants to lessen its travel expenses, which amounts to P80,000 per trip, according to the report.
However, the UFL said it was “not ready yet” to accommodate Cebu Queen City’s request, the report quoted team official Stanley Villacin.
With the incident, the victory was given to Dolphins United, which earned three points and the early lead in the Division Two table.
Meanwhile, Nomads FC edged Philippine Air Force, 1-0, in the second game.

UFL organizers did not do their jobs.
ReplyDeleteUFL organizers had all the time in last season (yeah, the whole season last year) to check on CQCU. CQCU already aired their concerns at the start of last season.
They knew for some time the predicament of CQCU and they should have earlier decided decisively not to include CQCU after considering all options.
Time to wake up guys!

DeleteWhat chance is there of football growing in the provinces if even the biggest city teams have the hassle of travelling to Manila for every game? Any professional coach will tell you the roar of a home crowd is the best incentive any squad can have.
