THE Cebu Football Association (CFA) is looking forward to another hosting stint a
fter Cebu was nominated as the venue of the Asian Football Confederation
President’s Cup.
This was announced by Philippine Football Federation President Mariano
“Nonong” Araneta in last Sunday’s CFA General Assembly at Oakridge Pavillion.
Araneta said that the PFF had bid to be the host the for the AFC President’s
Cup on
May 2 to 12 and nominated Cebu as the host city.
The President’s Cup is a club competition for emerging countries and Asia
and this year, the Philippines will have a representative for the first time.
Global FC, owned by Dan Palami,
will play in the President’s Cup after winning the United Football League title
last year.
“We hope that we will be successful in our bid and I think we have been given some
sort of assurance
that we will be in the top three of hosting this event,” said Araneta.
The other two options are Nepal and Cambodia.
Araneta said the successful hosting of the Philippines vs. Singapore friendly
last year signalled the start of the board to contribute in the development of
football not only in Cebu but in the country.
He mentioned that the friendly match last year is only the beginning for Cebu
hosting more
international football matches.
“I would like Cebu to host more international matches and this is a challenge I give
to the board,”
 said Araneta.
Meanwhile, aside from the formal induction and oath taking of the board which took
its seat May of last year, the general assembly also recognized member clubs—
which grew from 25 to 90--and referees in good standing.
Aside from Araneta, Palami and PFF General Secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes
also attended the affair.
The board also presented its financial report, which shows assets of than
P3 million.
“Values embodied in our actions are the true manifestations of our character.
The development of an active value system was the first commitment the board had
made to the community,” said CFA President Ricky Dakay.
The board also gave special awards to Don Bosco Technology Center
Elementary Team and Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu High School for its
achievements in the
Palarong Pambansa, Milo National Little Olympics, Central Visayas Regional
Athletic Association.
Other awardees were Vincent Ramos, Ricky Ballesteros for his invaluable
support in CFA programs, members of the media, and organizers of the
longest running football
festival (Thirsty Cup) and longest football tournament Aboitiz Cup.
