Philippine national men’s football team coach Hans Michael Weiss will get another contract extension after steering the Azkals to the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup next year.
Weiss, who got a six-month renewal last February, said that an extension of until June 2014 will be in place, which will allow him to coach the Azkals again for the tournament next year.
“If we succeed in this stage, a contract extension will be in place,” Weiss said. “That is the case now.”
Under Weiss, the Azkals enjoyed success, bringing them to a number of podium finishes in several tournaments, including a second straight semifinal finish in the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup and a title run in the Philippine Football Peace Cup last year, the country’s first crown in almost a century.
The Azkals were also able to boost their lineup after luring a couple of foreign-based players, as well as played in various international friendlies here and abroad with Weiss at the helm.
With him leading the Azkals in Maldives next year, Weiss said that surpassing their third-place finish in the Challenge Cup last year will be yet another tough test for them towards their ambitious goal. The winner of the Challenge Cup next year will qualify to the prestigious Asian Cup in 2015.
“We have a tough time ahead,” Weiss said.
