Azkals to focus on offense vs Cambodia

by Dennis Gasgonia, ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA – Philippine football team coach Michael Weiss said the Azkals will go on an offensive mode against the Cambodian Angkor Warriors when they meet in the 2104 AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers on Sunday.
Weiss saw defensive lapses on the part of Cambodia when the latter fell, 0-7, to Turkmenistan last Friday.
The German coach believes the Philippine squad will finally score against the Cambodians.
“We will go 100% in offensive power against Cambodia on Sunday. We will cause them a lot of problems and pressurize them early on and hopefully score a lot of goals,” said Weiss.
Sunday’s game will be a rematch between the two football squads who earlier battled to a goalless draw in Phnom Penh last September.
But James Younghusband believes that with a superior line-up and hometown advantage, the Azkals will be successful against the Angkor Warriors this time around.
“It was a very difficult game in Cambodia. The pitch was difficult to play on,” recalled Younghusband.
“Now we have the home advantage and we are very excited to get our campaign kicked off. The Azkals will definitely score this time.”
The Philippines will be fielding its best selection in years, which includes Stephan Schrock, Phil and James Younghusband, Chieffy Caligdong, Neil Etheridge, Angel and Juan Luis Guirado, and new found Filipino-Spanish talent Javier Patino.
Cambodian coach Prak Sovannara admitted they expect a stronger Philippine team with its current roster.
“This is a new team with different players. We cannot compare the previous results to this team. We are expecting them to be strong,” said Sovannara.
The Azkals also had more days to prepare due to Brunei Darussalam's withdrawal from the qualifiers.
This gave them the chance to study their opponents by watching the first match between Cambodia and Turkmenistan.

The Philippines vs Cambodia coverage will be aired on Studio 23 and Balls Channel starting 7 p.m. Kick off will be at 7:30 p.m.
