MANILA—The Philippine Sports Commission, in its effort to sustain the development of football in the country, hired veteran German coach Thomas Roy.
PSC chairman Richie Garcia said that Roy’s contract with the government is at least two years but can be extended up to the maximum of four years. He will be arriving in July to start the job, according to Garcia.
Roy is expected to supervise a comprehensive national football program aimed toward sustaining the growth of the popular sport. He is currently manager of the German-Youth Soccer Development System as well as coach and instructor of the Bavarian Football Association.
Garcia said that included in the program is the scouting system, which will identify talented football players and training courses for coaches and instructors.
“Through the updated and scientific methods of football training not only to players but also to coaches and trainers, we will be able to sustain the interest and development of football in the country. This is only the beginning because the PSC is also negotiating with other powerhouse nations,” Garcia said.
The hiring of Roy is part of the earlier study made by German Olympic Committee technical adviser Eckhard Krautzin when he visited the country in 2011 to evaluate grassroots development.
