The 2013 Singapore Cup, an invitational club tournament featuring teams from Southeast Asia, will kick off its preliminary round later this month, with United Football League squad Loyola Meralco Sparks playing in the opening day of the competition.
The Sparks will face Malaysian side Harimau Muda B on May 26 at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
Meanwhile, reigning UFL champion Global FC will meet defending Singapore Cup titlist Warriors FC on the last day of the opening round on June 1 at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium also in the city-state.
The winners of the matches will advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. A cash prize of 100,000 Singapore dollars will be given to this year’s champion.
A total of 16 teams will participate in the Singapore Cup, with 12 teams coming from the S.League, Singapore’s premier football league, and four clubs invited from Southeast Asia. Aside from Loyola and Global, Boeung Ket FC of Cambodia and Lao Police FC of Laos will also play in the tournament.
Last year, Loyola reached the semifinals and finished a respectable fourth place in its tournament debut last year. Global, meanwhile, will make its first appearance in the competition.
