Cebu faces powerhouse Global in Smart Cup

By Edri K. Aznar

AFTER dropping out of contention for the United Football League (UFL) Cup title, Cebu Queen City United (CQCU) hopes to keep their championship dreams alive in Philippine Football Federation (PFF)-Smart National Club Championships.
CQCU takes on powerhouse Global FC in the final Group E elimination match tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Cebu City Sports Center football pitch.
CQCU, who dropped out of the UFL Cup after a 2-0 loss to Stallion FC, earlier had already advanced to the next round after beating Hijos FC, 8-1, in October. CQCU and Hijos FC were the only two teams of Group E then.
However, Global FC suddenly popped up into the picture and CQCU needs to beat the star-laden squad to enter into the next round.
Global FC is loaded with Azkal mainstays and local stars, the likes of Mark Hartmann, Jason de Jong, Angel Guirado, Paul Mulders, Jeffrey Christiaens, Marwin Angeles, Ed Sacapano and Misagh Bahadoran.
To advance to the next round, the Cebuanos need to beat Global FC, which only needs a draw to move on to the next stage.
Global FC way ahead goal difference after whipping Hijos FC, 23-0, in Tacloban City.
Like CQCU, Global FC is also out of title contention in the UFL Cup after bowing to rival side Loyola Meralco Sparks, 2-0, in the quarterfinal round.
