A Global FC side that’s starting to gain some steam tests the mettle of Philippine Army when they collide on Saturday in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill.
After starting the season on the wrong foot with a blowout loss to Loyola, the perennial title contenders have bunched two consecutive wins and are vying to sustain their streak, this time against a re-jigged Troopers that had impressed early on.
So impressive is Army that the military side, which barely escaped relegation last year, is currently running second in the nine-team standings with seven points after joining forces with General Trias International in the offseason.
Kickoff is at 6:15 p.m. with Global, in fifth spot with six points, trying to unseat Army in its lofty place.
Global is coming off two come-from-behind wins, including a 3-1 victory over Pasargad almost two weeks ago, and skipper Ben Starosta, who scored along with Milad Behgandom, and Marvin Angeles against Pasargad, hopes his team begins on the right foot this time.
“We’ve shown good character to come back in the game, so that’s a good point,” the Polish utility booter said. “Hopefully (against Army) we can score first to make it a little bit easier.”
“We can get an awful lot better,” Global coach Leigh Manson said.
But Global is set to face a Korean-powered side that is fresh from defeating another contender in Pachanga with a stunning 2-0 decision last Thursday.
“We know how strong Global is, so we will prepare,” Troopers co-head coach Min Byung Jik said through an interpreter.
Kaya FC, which also has six points like Global, also seeks a share of second place when it tangles with eighth-running Green Archers United in the nightcap at 8:30 p.m.
