Stallions keep faint UFL title hopes alive after five-goal romp against Pasargad

By Karlo Sacamos

STALLION FC kept its flickering hopes for back-to-back titles alive as it drubbed Pasargad, 5-0, on Tuesday in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill.
Nathan Alquiros sparkled with a brace, while Ruben Doctora, Nasser Douroudian, and Meliton Pelayo chipped in a goal apiece for the Stallions, who have slowly but surely crept up to a share of third place with Kaya FC.
The defending champions also added to the misery of a listless Pasargad side that remained at the bottom and on track for relegation after its ninth loss in 11 games.
The Stallions’ destiny, however, is not entirely in their hands with Loyola and Global FC not planning to surrender their hold of the top two spots any time soon.
“We just have to win games. That’s all we can do. Whatever happens will happen,” Stallions coach Ernie Nierras said.
Doctora, the Azkals returnee, scored for the third straight game as the Stallions skipper opened the floodgates 17 minutes into the game, before coming out just nine minutes later with a left hamstring injury.
Douroudian replaced Doctora and made an immediate impact barely a minute later as he assisted on Alquiros’ first goal that doubled the lead.
In his first start this season, Alquiros fired his second goal off a Belinga Blanchard dish 12 minutes after the restart.
“He’s built for the UFL,” Nierras said of Alquiros, the La Salle standout who rarely scores in the UAAP.
Pelayo sneaked in a goal two minutes into second-half stoppage time to complete the blowout.
The Stallions also performed on the other end, keeping a clean sheet without suspended top center-back Simone Rota.
