South China too much for Global FC, dents UFL side's chances of advancing in Asian tourney

GLOBAL FC failed to build on a promising start as it bowed to South China, 3-0, in the opponent’s turf at the Mongkok Stadium in Hong Kong, leaving a huge dent in its Asian Football Confederation Cup campaign.
The reigning United Football League championships held the hosts scoreless for most of the first half, only to concede one late and two more after intermission to suffer the costly setback.
Global thus stayed in third spot with four points, behind second-running Pahang by three points.
But the Philippine representative can still advance to the knockout stage if it prevails against the Malaysian side in the last Group G match on May 13, owing to the head-to-head rule. The teams battled to a scoreless draw in Malaysia last March.
Coming off a historic 4-1 win over Yadanarbon of Myanmar two weeks ago at the Philippine Stadium, Global was eager to duplicate the feat and pull off an upset against group pacesetting South China.
But the UFL giants gave up a goal five minutes before first-half injury time when Cheng Lai Hin scored just seconds after coming in.
Bojan Malisic doubled the lead in the 55th minute, before Daniel Mcbreen added insult to injury by sneaking in the third goal two minutes into stoppage time.
Still, the result was an improvement for Global, which lost to South China, 6-1, at home in the opening match.

Global seeks upset over crack HK side Wednesday night

By Cedelf P. Tupas

HONG KONG—Riding high on a three-match winning streak in all competitions, United Football League champion Global seeks a king-size upset against Hong Kong powerhouse South China Wednesday night in their AFC Cup Group G clash here.
Running third with four points from four matches, the Filipino side is hard-pressed to pick up points in the 8 p.m. showdown at Mongkok Stadium.
Level on points but behind on goal difference to Malaysia’s Pahang, coach Leigh Manson’s charges can put themselves in a good position to qualify for the next round if they get at least a draw against a team that beat them, 6-1, two months ago at Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
“I think we need to take something out of this game with one or three points to make the final group game [against Pahang] a winner-take-all game,” said Manson.
South China had clinched a knockout stage spot after winning all its four games so far.
Global stunned Ceres, 2-0, in the United Football League, before nailing a historic 4-1 win over Burma’s (Myanmar) Yadanarbon two weeks ago at Philippine Stadium.

OFFICIAL: Brad Grayson Wraps Up Sparks’ Transfer Activity

The Loyola Meralco Sparks ends its busy UFL transfer window with the signing of Englishman Brad Grayson, adding firepower to the club’s forward line. The young striker started his career with Doncaster Rovers in the second tier of English football, before enjoying stints in Sweden and Australia, where he managed fantastic goal scoring returns.
“Brad Grayson is a player in a position that we have been looking to add some depth to. With the loss of Fred (Gonzales) and Cham the burden has been on Phil (Younghusband) and Graham (Caygill)to score all the goals.  We have always preached the need for competition and with the addition of Napo (Bustillo) and Brad, it solidifies our attack with several options,” team manager Armand Del Rosario said.
Grayson was the top goal scorer in the youth team during his two seasons with Doncaster Rovers. He bagged 24 goals in 22 appearances with Swedish side Ange IF in the 2012-13 season, before turning in eight goals in 14 games for South Australian Premier League side Cumberland FC. In his last stint in England with non league side Stocksbridge, the young forward scored 14 goals despite the team’s struggling form. With his move to Loyola, the management hopes the Englishman’s scoring prowess can turn the tide in what has been an extremely tight title race.
“Brad is a player that came highly recommended by Adam Mitter. They played together in the past. After looking into his film and seeing his CV, coach Simon and I were able to make a decision that this is the guy we wanted to bring in. He’s a talented young striker with a track record of scoring and assisting goals no matter what level he has played at. We have high hopes for him. And as you can see, we are tied for 3rd place but by default, go to 5th because of the goal differential. No doubt this league title will come down to the wire and if we want a shot at this we need to be scoring goals,” said Del Rosario.
“The hope is to solidify what we feel is an already solid defensive line, while strengthening our team going forward – scoring more goals. With this added depth and talent we should have a very strong and competitive lineup to complete the UFL League and UFL Cup.”
Grayson is the club’s sixth and final signing in the midseason transfer window, following Curt Dizon, Napo Bustillo, Jake Morallo, Saba Garmaroudi, and Alvin Sarmiento
“I’m really looking forward to seeing these guys come together on the pitch.”

Alvin Sarmiento Signs for the Sparks

London-based Alvin Sarmiento is the fifth player to sign for the Loyola Meralco Sparks in the recently closed transfer window. The young talent has been consistently training with the Sparks lately, and his performances in the sessions has convinced head coach Simon McMenemy to give the player a contract with the team.
“This sticks to our plan to get young Filipino Players to develop alongside our strong leadership and talent. He’s been working hard in training and it goes to show how hard work and dedication will win you a contract. He has caught Coach Simon’s eye and that’s always a good thing for a player. Coach has said he can use Alvin as cover at either wing back position and being young, he still has time to adapt, as he came to us as more of an offensive player. The potential is there, he is being given the opportunity now. It’s on him to make the most of it. I feel we have a good young core of players and he fits right into that mold,” said team manager Armand Del Rosario.
Sarmiento joins Curt Dizon, Jorrel Aristorenas and Charlie Beaton as the contingent of young Filipino Sparks with English roots. Already close off the pitch, their camaraderie ensures the settling in period will be swift for the new additions. And with an opportunity to train alongside the nation’s finest footballing stars, Del Rosario is convinced the youngsters have the perfect environment to maximize their potential.
“If these kids can develop for a year or two behind our veteran players and team leaders, they will get their opportunity to shine. Look at Charlie and Jorrel, these guys have gotten chances here and there and they have shown that they can play at this level. They have started games for us and we see them as a big part of our future. Alvin fits right into this mold alongside Josh [Grommen] and Curt as well. This is the time they put in that extra work off the pitch to get them to that next level!”

Kaya signs new players

Kaya Futbol Club is delighted to announce that we have signed Kittitian striker Tishan Hanley, Ivorian defender Delon Patrick Yao, and English defender Benjamin Bowra. We would also like to congratulate Kaya youngster Paeng Siggaoat, who has been signed to our first-team squad.
Tishan Hanley, from Saint Kitts and Nevis, has played for various American soccer teams in his career, with the Harrisburg City Islanders being his first and the Richmond Kickers as his last before joining Kaya. He played for Saint Kitts and Nevis’s U-17 team at the 2007 CONCACAF U-17 tournament and currently plays for the senior team, where he made his debut in 2008. He was recently called up to participate in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers (CONCACAF first round) against Turks and Caicos and scored in the first leg. They will be facing El Salvador in the second round of CONCACAF’s World Cup qualification process after defeating Turks and Caicos, 12–4, on aggregate.
Paeng Siggaoat, a center midfielder, is another graduate of Kaya FC Academy who has risen through the ranks to become part of the first-team squad. He played in the 2014 Charity Cup alongside other young Kaya players such as Rocky Plaza, Nino Herrera, and Nicholas Cruz, who have been part of the first team. We are always pleased to sign promising young Kaya players because it showcases the quality and potential of our academy, where aspiring footballers can harness their talents and pursue a career in football. We are committed to developing young players and giving them a chance to succeed in football.
Delon Patrick Yao, from Ivory Coast, was a long-standing defender of Global FC, joining them in 2012. He has a proven track record of success, and we believe he can help the team reach its goals. He also had a brief stint at Laos FC prior to joining Kaya.
Lastly, Ben Bowra, from England, briefly played as a defender for Stallion. He has played for clubs like Crawley Town, Worthing, Horsham YMCA, and Corinthian-Casuals.
We are thrilled to have them all on the team, and we look forward to seeing them in action in the UFL and 2015 UFL Cup, which will kick off this weekend.

Jason De Jong Returns to Global

Global FC is proud to announce that midfielder Jason De Jong has rejoined the People's Club.
The midfielder had a memorable stint for Global when he joined midway through the 2013 season. De Jong was part of the squad that played in the AFC President's Cup and the RHB Singapore Cup that year.
2014 saw De Jong reach greater heights. Named captain by Leigh Manson, he led the squad to a record breaking league title victory scoring five goals that season. De Jong also won the FA Charity Cup last year to snatch a rare double.
De Jong also shined for the national team. The midfielder made the central midfield position his own as the Philippines finished as runners up in the AFC Challenge Cup last year.
With his return to Global, the club has finally reignited their championship form in all competitions.
Also joining De Jong for Global are defenders Ian Clarino and Jahanbakhsh Taher. Clarino has played for the University of the Philippines in the UAAP and is the brother of another new signing in OJ Clarino.
Taher joined Global from Manila Jeepney. The Iranian defender also played for Pasargad last year. Norio Suzuki and Matthew Hartmann were also signed during the transfer window.
De Jong will once again wear the number 6 jersey for Global. Ian Clarino and Taher's jersey numbers will be announced in a future date.

Robert Mendy shines as World Team turns back Azkals-loaded PH selection in UFL All-Star game

THE foreigners were better — but just barely — than the Filipinos on this night.
The Rest of the World team survived a late scare from the Philippine squad to hack out a 5-4 victory in the United Football League All-Star match on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Senegalese striker Robert Mendy of Green Archers United registered a hat-trick in the second half that gave his team enough cushion to negate a late rally.
Nate Burkey and Anton del Rosario conspired with two late goals in a span of four minutes to lead the Azkals-loaded Filipinos’ comeback that just fell short in the charity exhibition that marked the end of the first round of Division 1 competition.
The foreigners established a 5-2 cushion after two quick goals from Mendy starting in the 82nd minute, before the Filipinos retaliated with two of two of their own in the 86th and 90th minutes to set the stage for the thrilling finish.
The Filipinos actually took the early lead, 1-0, after a Misagh Bahadoran converted an OJ Porteria cross seven minutes into the match, before foreign
Negros Occidental, behind a hat-trick from Jinggoy Valmayor, earned bragging rights over fierce rival Iloilo with a 5-3 victory in the Western Visayas Classic earlier.

Official: Jake Morallo Returns, Saba Garmaroudi Signs

The United Football League transfer window slams shut at midnight April 26, officially closing the period when clubs can add players to their roster. The Loyola Meralco Sparks have already signed Curt Dizon and Napo Busillo so far, and the club has officially added winger Jake Morallo and goalkeeper Saba Garmaroudi to the lineup as well. The duo are First Division veterans that add more depth to the Sparks.
Sadeghi transfers from 2nd Division club Laos. Prior to his stint with the current second tier leaders, the Iranian shot stopper was Kaya’s first choice keeper. His performances in goal earned him the best goalkeeper award in the 2012 UFL season. Freshly finished with his Dentistry studies, Saba is ready for his return to 1st Division play, providing instant competition for current Sparks number one, Tomas Trigo.
“We all know Saba as a former 1st division keeper. He has the quality to start and can challenge immediately for a starting position if he works hard and gains the trust of coach (Simon McMenemy). This is a way for Saba to get regular first division training and coaching under coach Dang (Pedro Cecilio) and I feel this will strengthen the club for the remainder of the year. Our goal is to win Championships and to do that we need competition throughout the pitch. This will be good for both him and Tommy Trigo. With his dentistry course done he can now focus full time on football,” said team manager Armand Del Rosario.
Rejoining the club is Jake Morallo, fresh from his year-long loan at Manila Jeepney. The winger scored against the Sparks in their first round meeting in the UFL League, evidence that the tricky veteran is back to his confident best. Del Rosario was understandably pleased that the player is back with the club.
“It’s nice to have such a talented player come back to the team. This young winger has all the talent in the world. For whatever reason his growth was stunted in his stint with Meralco but this past year away from the club we have seen his confidence come back and he’s been scoring goals and playing well for Manila Jeepney. Coupled with his positive attitude, I really feel that under Coach Simon, Jake will have a positive influence on the team and will be ready to compete for a role in the team. He adds for us good depth and strength on the wing. I truly feel with the right team and the proper coaching, Jake can get to the National team in the future.”

Global Sign Norio Suzuki

In a bid to challenge in all fronts, Global FC has bolstered the squad once again with the signing of Japanese forward Norio Suzuki.
Suzuki played for four J. League Division 1 sides in F.C. Tokyo, Vissel Kobe, Omiya Ardija and Vegalta Sendai. He was also part of the Japan Under-20 squad that played in the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championships.
The winger will be the second player to have played in Japan's top flight after Masaki Yanagawa arrived for the People's Club last January.
Suzuki is set to be a vital part of Leigh Manson's squad as the side is also preparing for the UFL Cup, the second round of the league and the RHB Singapore Cup.
The winger will wear number 15 when he makes his first appearance for the People's Club.

Ceres back to winning ways with blanking of Socceroo -

By Ivan Saldajeno

MANILA--Ceres quickly bounced back from a stinging defeat to Global with a 4-0 rout of Socceroo in a Tuesday night UFL battle at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Three nights after the loss, Ceres appeared to be heading to the wrong side of a Socceroo upset as the latter, currently in ninth place, held the league leader scoreless for almost the entire first half.

Ceres finally got on the board when Orman Okunaiya scored with just a minute left before halftime.

A penalty goal by Patrick Reichelt two minutes into the second half started the late onslaught for Ceres that even saw seldom-used Dapal Unabia getting a goal in the 69th minute.

Nate Burkey sealed the win for Ceres with another spot kick goal in the 83rd minute.

Ceres, which gave some of its stars a rest on Tuesday, finished the first round with 24 points, three points clear of Stallion and five points ahead of defending champion Global in the race for number one.

Stallion FC eases past 10-man Green Archers behind late Jordan Mintah strike

STALLION FC survived a resolute Green Archers United, 2-1, to move within striking distance of the lead in the United Football League on Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Stallions leaned a late goal from Jordan Mintah to break a deadlock and overcome an Archers side that played with just 10 men most of the match.
As a result, the Stallions moved two spots up to second with 21 points after nine outings, ahead of Kaya FC and Loyola Meralco by three points, although having played one match more than the two perennial contenders.
The Archers, on the back foot since Herve Ebanda picked up two yellow cards in a span of five minutes early in the first half, were stuck in sixth spot with 11 points.
Pouncing on the departure of the Cameroonian defender, Shirmar Felongco struck for the Stallions a minute before first-half injury time when the University of Santo Tomas star scored past Paolo Pascual.
The Archers, though, didn’t go down without a fight as Jovanie Simpron provided the spark off the bench with the equalizing goal in the 83rd minute.
That, however, only set the stage for Mintah’s heroics as the Ghanaian striker found the back of the net two minutes into stoppage time.
Manila Jeepney finally registered in the win column with a 3-1 victory over Socceroo earlier.
Jeepney notched a first win in nine matches to move two spots up to seventh spot with five points, while keeping Socceroo second to last with just four points to show.

SEAG team to miss Azkals mainstays?

By Olmin Leyba

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine Under-22 football team may miss the services of eligible Azkals mainstays like Amani Aguinaldo for its Southeast Asian Games campaign as the Philippine Football Federation has placed top priority on the senior national team's bid in the Fifa World Cup qualifying tourney, which runs in scheduling conflict with the peninsular meet.
The Singapore SEA Games’ football competition is slated May 29-June 11, a period in which the Azkals are in the heat of their buildup for the first two games in the World Cup qualifiers slated June 11 and 16.
Aguinaldo, along with Kenshiro Daniels, Mark Hartmann, Manny Ott, OJ Porteria and Daisuke Sato have been listed in the 30-man pool for the SEAG but should they be tapped for the WCQ, will be joining the Azkals instead.
“We’ll have to take it up with the two coaching staffs (U-22 team and Azkals). Of course, the priority is the senior national team. But it really would depend on who will be called up for the (Azkals) training and first matches in the World Cup Qualifiers,” PFF general-secretary Edwin Gastanes told the STAR.
“Those not be selected (for the Azkals campaign), in all likelihood, will be in the U-22 (SEAG team). There are many players for the U-22, they have been together for the AFC U-23 tournament, and previous to that, they had a training camp in Japan. They’ve been training silently and we’re arranging local and foreign camps and friendlies before the SEA Games,” said Gastanes.
The PFF exec said the Philippines is not alone in this situation.

"All the Asean countries face the same problem. In fact the Asean Football Federation has requested the AFC to reschedule the World Cup Qualifiers (in order to send the best teams to the SEA Games as well)," he said.
In Phl's initial list for the SEAG team are Luis Cesar Abadia, Ronnie Aguisanda, Nathanael Alquiros, Arnel Amita, Fotch Arboleda, Florencio Badelic, Mark Besana Jaime Cheng, Julian Mariano Clarino, Dominic del Rosario, Curt Dizon, Neil Dorimon, Daniel Gadia, Joshua Jake Grommen, John Kanayama, Nicholas O’Donnell, Paolo Salenga, Francisco Santos, Connor Tacagni, Richard Talaroc Jr., Kennedy Uzoka, Jinggoy Valmayor and Nathaniel Villanueva.
Phl U-22 Coaches Marlon Marlo and Jim Fraser will later trim the list to the Final 20 for the SEAG battle.
The U-22 booters, who are making a return to the SEAG after skipping the last edition, are bracketed with host Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar and Cambodia in Group A of the SEAG.
“Many say the draw was kind to us. But all of the teams have been preparing also,” said Gastanes.

Long travel time a concern for Azkals in qualifiers for 2018 Fifa World Cup

WHILE ruing the missed chance of being in a more favorable group, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) believes the national men’s team is capable of pulling off surprises in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers starting this June.
The Azkals have been drawn in an unpredictable Group H with Uzbekistan, Bahrain, North Korea, and Yemen.
“I think we could’ve gotten a better draw,” PFF president Nonong Araneta said on Wednesday night during intermission of the Global FC-Yadanarbon Asian Football Confederation Cup match at the Philippine Stadium.
Araneta feels the Filipino booters would’ve had an easier traveling experience if they were bracketed in Group F composed of fellow Southeast Asian nations Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia, another neighbor in Chinese Tapei, along with Middle East power Iraq.
“Ang sa akin lang 'yung distance nung game eh,” the PFF chief said, noting the Azkals will have two away matches in a span of just six days, on October 8 in Pyongyang then five days later in Bahrain.
“Yun ang medyo mabigat para sa team,” Araneta continued. “We’re looking for the shortest possible connecting flight para at least they can be in Bahrain right away.”
There are no direct flights to Bahrain and to Uzbekistan, the top-ranked nation in the group at 73rd, which, Araneta said, is 13 hours away from the Philippines via plane.
Playing in war-torn Yemen is also improbable, according to Araneta, who bared the away match could be played in a neutral ground in Bahrain.
The Azkals start their campaign with a home match against Bahrain on June 11 tentatively at the Philippine Stadium, with all their matches played in Fifa match days, ending in March next year.
“Pero wala tayo magawa,” Araneta said. “That’s water under the bridge. We just have to do our own preparation.”
“We just have to make sure all the players are available,” the former national team standout added as the Azkals are expecting new faces to join the squad in half-Australian midfielder Iain Ramsay, half-Austrian defender Stephen Palla, and half-British teenager Luke Woodland, as well as the return of star Stephan Schrock.
“If all our players are available, then we have a good chance of making some upsets there,” Araneta said, adding the PFF is trying to arrange a friendly possibly against Vietnam next month.

Azkals to play World Cup qualifiers home games at PSS

By Cedelf P. Tupas

The newly-built Philippine Sports Stadium in Bulacan will serve as the Philippine Azkals’ home field when they vie in the World Cup Qualifiers starting with the showdown with Bahrain on June 11.
Philippine Football Federation president Mariano Araneta said the PSS was an easy choice as the Iglesia ni Cristo-owned facility can seat 20,000 people with a natural grass pitch.
“We will be playing our officials matches here (at PSS),” said Araneta, who attended the AFC Cup match between Global and Yadanarbon at the PSS Wednesday night.
Araneta felt the Azkals could have gotten a better draw in the World Cup Qualifiers, after the Filipinos were grouped with Uzbekistan, Bahrain, North Korea and Yemen. The PFF chief pointed to the difficulty of traveling for away matches that could take a toll on the team.
“My concern is the travel of the team,” said Araneta, citing the away games in October that sees the Azkals traveling to Pyongyang for the match against North Korea, before traveling on Oct. 13 to Manama for the away leg against Bahrain.
The PFF chief said the priority now is to have all players available for the matches.
“We have to make sure that we have all the players are available that they will be able to train together next month and hopefully we can arrange one friendly here in May,” said Araneta.
Stephan Schrock is expected to return to the side after reconciling with coach Thomas Dooley, who is expected to tap new recruits Iain Ramsay, Stephen Palla and Luke Woodland to boost the roster for the qualifying campaign.

UFL stages All-Star Game, Western Visayas Classic

The United Football League stages its inaugural All-Star weekend on April 25 with the league’s finest Filipino players joining forces as they square off against a crack Rest of the World team at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Phil Younghusband of the Loyola Meralco Sparks, OJ Porteria of Kaya and Manny Ott of Ceres are among those expected to banner the Filipino side in the All-Star game highlighting festivities that begin at 4 p.m.
The Western Visayas Classic pitting players from fierce rivals Negros Occidental and Iloilo will serve as the appetizer for the main All Star showcase.
“This is one way of giving back to our fans and as well as the league’s aim to continue inspiring the youth to take up the sport,” said UFL general manager Rely San Agustin yesterday at the PSA Forum at Shakey’s Malate.
UFL marketing manager Rico Meneses said the players for the All Star game will be selected via online voting at www.football.com.ph as well as votes from media and Football Alliance which runs the league.
“We asked the 10 teams to nominate five Filipino and five foreign players to the All Star game and the fans will help decide which players can make the 18-player teams,” said Meneses.
San Agustin said Operation Smile has been selected as the beneficiary for the All Star weekend.
The festivities backed by LGR Sportswear and Giligans start with an 11 vs 100 match where captains of UFL first division teams will go up against 100 selected participants in the UFL Youth competition aged nine years old and below.
“It’s a chance for these young players to experience being on the same field as their idols,” said San Agustin.
Stallion’s Ruben Doctora will captain the Iloilo team in the Western Visayas Classic, while Ed Sacapano will skipper the Negros Occidental side.
“It’s the biggest rivalry in Philippine football,” said San Agustin referring to the Negros-Ilolo clash. “It’s all about bragging rights as to which province is the best in football in the country.”
