Azkals in AFC qualifiers: No smooth ride the rest of the way R

The Philippines may have opened its AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Nepal Tuesday, but the Azkals can’t expect a smooth ride the rest of the way as they attempt to advance to the prestigious competition in 2019 for the first time in the United Arab Emirates.
The Azkals leaned on a brace from Phil Younghusband and a goal each from Iain Ramsay and Javier Patino to overwhelm Ghorkalis at Rizal Memorial Stadium, but there were still spells in the match where the home side switched off, allowing Nepal to pull a goal back even with a man disadvantage.
Azkals manager Dan Palami was delighted with the victory that ended a four-match winless run for the team. But he expressed concern over the performance of the Azkals, saying stronger teams could have punished the Filipinos with their mistakes, particularly in defense.
“We can’t expect everything to be easy from hereon,” said Palami. “We are the top seeds in our group and we must play like one. We have to get better because we might not even qualify with that kind of game.”

The Azkals will face a familiar foe in Tajikistan in Dushanbe on June 13 for their second assignment in Group F.

The Tajiks, who lost to the Azkals in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup in Kathmandu, are desperate to pick up points after they suffered a 1-2 defeat to Yemen in the other group match in Doha, Qatar.
“It’s going to be a different game (against Tajikistan) because they are a more physical side compared to Nepal,” said veteran James Younghusband.
The Philippine Football Federation is lining up a friendly against powerhouse China in Guangzhou in early June before the Tajikistan game.
Only the top two teams from Group F will qualify for the 2019 Asian Cup, which has been expanded to 24 teams, eight more than in the previous edition won by Australia in 2015.

ARISTORENAS, WOODLAND, AND NAZARI COMPLETE FIRST QUARTER SIGNINGS

Three players in Jorrel Aristorenas, Luke Woodland, and Omid Nazari are the latest signings for Ceres-Negros FC in the first quarter of 2017. Aristorenas and Woodland were signed early in the year with Nazari completing his move to the Bacolod squad late this month.
Aristorenas moved to the Busmen after his stint with Loyola Meralco for the last three years which saw him win the latest PFF National Club Championship and feature in the National Under 23 squad last 2015. The 23-year old is an attacking player who prefers to play in the midfield and is known as a provider from the middle of the park
Luke comes in from England after a brief stay in York City. The current Azkals player has played for England in the youth level after going through the youth levels for his boyhood club Bolton Wanderers. He featured for the Azkals in 2015 at the young age of 19 and was a steady presence in the 2018 World Cup Qualifying campaign. Now at 21, the dynamic player can play either defensive midfield or center back for his squad.
Omid was born in Malmo in Sweden to an Iranian father and a Filipina mother. The striker played in the youth teams of Malmo FF before breaking into the first team. Nazari then continued in other teams in Sweden before moving to Global FC in 2016 where he contributed in the team’s double win in the United Football League. The Filipino-Iranian also featured in the Iran National team, playing friendlies for the Asian powerhouse.
Both Aristorenas and Woodland are featured in the Group Stage of the 2017 AFC Cup while Nazari will be included once the team qualifies for the next round. The three players are tagged to be key contributors in Ceres’ quest for silverware this season.

AFC ASIAN CUP 2019 QUALIFIERS: PHILIPPINES 4-1 NEPAL

Manilla: Captain Phil Younghusband scored twice in the first half as the Philippines made the ideal start to their 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign with a 4-1 home win over 10-man Nepal in Group F at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on Tuesday.
Younghusband missed a penalty after Nepal’s Bikram Lama had been sent-off, but the Philippines captain made amends with two goals in the space of three minutes midway through the first half.
Iain Ramsay extended the advantage for the home side soon after, and after Bishal Rai had struck in first half stoppage time for the visitors, Javier Patino sealed the win in the closings stages of the second half.
The Philippines had an early chance to take the lead as Nepal’s Bikram Lama was sent off for handball after just 13 minutes, but visiting goalkeeper Kiran Chemjong saved Younghusband’s resulting penalty.
But the Philippines captain made no mistake after 21 minutes as the home side were awarded another spot kick following a foul by Rabin Shrestha on the striker, and despite the Nepal goalkeeper again guessing the right way, Younghusband’s strike was too good.
And just two minutes later the home side added a second as Younghusband converted from inside the penalty area.
The Philippines then added a third after 27 minutes as Nepal failed to deal with a free-kick played into the penalty area and Ramsay eventually hooked the ball into the bottom corner.
But in first half stoppage time Nepal pulled a goal back as substitute Bishal Rai ghosted into the penalty area to fire home following good work from the visitors.
The second half started as a cagey affair, but with 18 minutes remaining the home side restored their three-goal advantage as Patino fired home from inside the area.

Azkals tipped to squirm past Nepal side

By Cedelf P. Tupas

Being stuck in one of its worst runs of results in recent years hasn’t tilted the odds against the Philippines as it opens its AFC Asian Cup Qualifying campaign against Nepal on Tuesday at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Azkals are still fancied to pick up the full three points against the supposedly inferior Nepalese in the 8 p.m. kickoff, but they will be under scrutiny after an unconvincing display in the goalless draw against Malaysia in a friendly last Wednesday.
Tajikistan and Yemen clash in the other Group F match in Dushanbe. Only the top two teams from the group after the two-round home-and-away play will advance to the 24-team Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2019.

The Philippines has never played in the continental showpiece tournament, although it came within a whisker of the event when it reached the finals of the AFC Challenge Cup in the Maldives only to lose to Palestine, 1-0.
After reaching new heights with a landmark 3-2 victory over North Korea in World Cup Qualifying last year, the Azkals have yet to pick up a win of the same magnitude.
A sad AFF Suzuki Cup stint, in which they failed to score in two of their three games and failed to return to the semifinals, has cranked up the pressure on the Azkals, who are winless in their last four matches.
“It motivates us, whatever happened in the past,” said Azkals skipper Phil Younghusband. “We’re confident we can do the job.”
The Azkals will miss Misagh Bahadoran (knee) and Kevin Ingreso (hamstring) due to injury.
Coach Thomas Dooley has also relieved Martin Steuble of national team duties, following a disagreement during the Malaysia match and in training the day after, according to sources. Dooley replaced him with Antonio Ugarte of Kaya.

Nepalis confident vs Azkals in AFC game

By Olmin Leyba
MANILA, Philippines - Although lower in world ranking and 0-3 against the Philippine Azkals in their last three meetings, Nepal will go into their AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers duel with the host Pinoys positive about their chances for a reversal.
The 170th-ranked Nepalis, who in prior friendlies with Phl conceded a 0-4 loss in 2011 and a pair of 0-3 setbacks in 2014, set out to reverse the trend when they clash again with the No. 124 Azkals in Group F of the ACQ on Tuesday at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
“The Philippines’ players are physically and technically sound than us but it does not mean we are not capable of winning the match,” Nepal coach Gyotuku Koji was quoted by The Himalayan Times. “We will definitely go for a win.”
The Gorkhalis draw confidence from their twin triumphs in 2016, the Bangabandhu Gold Cup in Bangladesh and the AFC Solidarity Cup in Malaysia.
“Those successes have instilled confidence in the team and we will give the Philippines a tough fight,” Nepal skipper Biraj Maharjan, who also captained the U-23 squad that ruled the 2016 South Asian Games, said.
Maharjan said the 20-man team “prepared well for the encounter and the players are ready to give their best performance.” He, however, expressed concern on the hot weather in Phl as opposed to the cool environs in Nepal.
The Gorkhalis, who left Kathmandu for Manila yesterday, didn’t play a tuneup before the duel with the Azkals.

Stallion bags Invitational Cup title

By Jaelle Nevin Reyes

Stallion Laguna FC beat Loyola Meralco Sparks FC-Taguig, 2-0, in extra time to win the first Stallion Invitational Cup title at the Biñan Football Stadium on Friday.
The host club had to survive the challenge of fellow Philippine Football League member despite the absence of key players Ruben Doctora, Nathan Alquiros and Fitch Arboleda.
Doctora and Alquiros missed the match due to injuries while Arboleda is currently on duty with the senior men’s national team.
Substitute Ryo Tamiya and wingback Nana Thomert lifted the host squad to its first-ever championship at their new home stadium in Laguna.
Tamiya, after coming off the bench late in the match, quickly made his presence felt with a shot off a rebound of Matthew Nierras’ initial strike to take the lead in the 105th minute of extra time.
With just a few minutes left in the match, defender Thomert pierced Loyola’s defense with a goal of his own from an impressive run from the wing in the 120th minute.
“We were dominated by Loyola in the first half but we were able to make adjustments in the second half and get back into the game,” Stallion head coach Ernest Nierras said after the match.
Loyola battered the defense of the Stallions with a dominant display of attacking skills and Maxime Ziepop’s attempt in the 31st minute nearly hit the target.
However, Stallion FC goalkeeper Roland Sadia stood firm in between the sticks to foil the attempts of their foes, which had a 68-32 advantage in possession percentage.
The assertive stance of Loyola in its attacks continued in the second half but the Stallion’s back line stood firm until the end of regulation.
“Our substitutes also stepped in when they were called in,” added Nierras. “We were able to play what we wanted, which is to run and pass, run and pass. This victory is a good way for us to start the year.”

Azkals not panicking over scoreless draw, looking forward to Nepal match

By Cedelf P. Tupas

There’s no reason to panic, but the trend of unconvincing performances from the Philippines continued Tuesday night in a goalless draw against Malaysia in a friendly at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Almost a year after flashing their best attacking display against North Korea in the World Cup Qualifiers, the Azkals failed to break down a less heralded team in Malaysia as they were left stymied by the well-drilled and organized visitors.
Granted that the Azkals only got back to training three days ago, after a disappointing AFF Suzuki Cup campaign, it still came as a surprise that the Azkals weren’t able to finish off their chances with Phil Younghusband back playing up front alongside Chinese Super League veteran Javier Patino.

Azkals coach Thomas Dooley was quick to shrug off the result as the team looked ahead to their AFC Asian Cup Qualifying opener against Nepal on Tuesday when his team will be heavily favored to pick up three points.
“We would have loved to win after 26 years (against Malaysia), but the most important thing is the Nepal game,” said Dooley, who is expected to ink a fresh deal that will see him handle the Azkals until the end of the qualifying campaign.
“We ran a lot, we played nicely, but we just couldn’t finish. The last pass, I think, was a bit off.”
Azkals manager Dan Palami said the result was disappointing, although “it was a good base from which to start our preparation for the Nepal match.”
Finding positives out of the result, Azkals goalkeeper Neil Etheridge welcomed the clean sheet against one of Southeast Asia’s better sides.
Still, the Azkals’ inability to find the back of the net against teams that are set up solidly defensively remained a concern.
Pressing Malaysia’s centerbacks early, the Azkals only managed a couple of clear chances through Younghusband and Patino in the first half as they lacked that cutting edge in the attacking third for most of the match.
Adding to the Azkals’ woes was the suspected knee injury suffered by Misagh Bahadoran, whose chances of suiting up against Nepal are now slim. Bahadoran was subbed off in the 30th minute, replaced by Mike Ott.
“It’s a day-to-day observation,” said Palami. “We don’t ever risk a player getting injured.”

Thomas Dooley unalarmed after Azkals pegged back by Malaysia in goalless friendly

From Christian Jacinto

THE Philippine Azkals and Malaysia settled for a draw for a fifth straight time as their international friendly ended goalless on Wednesday evening at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The Azkals struggled to find a breakthrough against the tough Harimao defense in a game that was fought mainly at midfield before a few hundred home fans.

In the end it was Malaysia which had the best scoring chance as Ahmad Bakwan Mazri's blistering run late in the match almost resulted in the winner.

Luckily for the hosts, his shot sailed right.

Not even late substitutions from coach Thomas Dooley could spark a resurgence for the Azkals, who six more days to fix their finishing before opening their 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers next Tuesday in the same venue against Nepal.

"Overall, I'm not happy that we tied but the most important game is Nepal next week. I'm happy with the performance of the players. I'm happy with how we performed," Azkals coach Thomas Dooley said.

"It was kind of the last pass into the box which was a little bit off. Otherwise we could have gotten the lead in the first half. And after the first goal, that could have been easier," he added.

Malaysia head  coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee was naturally delighted with how they fared against an almost full-strength Philippine side.

"Our defense went very well. We were very organized. We were able to counter whatever strength the Philippines had," he said.

Sparks Triumph in Kaya-Makati Outing

After a splendid win against Belmont-Deft Touch FC, the Loyola Meralco Sparks came back to action with a smooth handling of Kaya-Makati FC in the group stage of the 2017 Stallion-Laguna Invitational Cup. The second half well-distributed scoring spree secured the Sparks the top spot in the group stage.
With the national team call ups out for the match, a bunch of new signings went to the pitch out and took over attacking duties. Connor Tacagni broke the deadlock 40-minutes into the game after several missed chances by the Sparks. Tacagni took charge and rapidly slipped past his opponents for the finish. Just before the first half ended, Tacagni had the chance to double the lead but his header was off.
Samuel Kouame opened the second half with his solo effort against Kaya’s backline and sent it to the back of the net. Kouame quickly setup another goal opportunity to Ashley Flores and the winger tripled the lead. The game was in favor to the Sparks but a sneaky goal by Kaya disrupted the squad’s rhythmn. The flag was up in one of Kaya’s attacks but no whistle was called by the referee. The confusion led to Ric Padilla leaving his post and gave Kaya an open chance to score. Sparks quickly responded with another goal. James Hall fired from the outside and Kone Yaya followed with the rebound. Yaya also sealed the game as he scored another one minute before the final whistle.well as he found the perfect spot to contribute two minutes later.
Despite the win, head coach, Aris Caslib, acknowledged the effort of Kaya-Makati FC.
“Overall the result was for us but then the boys of Kaya did their job as a unit,” said Caslib.
The head coach also noted that the mental battle inside the pitch dictated the flow of the game.
“It’s more of the concentration. Every match will always have a different problem and hopefully all the challenges of team will be addressed,” added Caslib.
Next Wednesday, the Sparks will face a another test as the will face either Kaya FC or Global FC. The game will kickoff at 3:30pm at the Binan Football Stadium.
