Laguna spoils Sanchez's virtual homecoming, stuns Cebu in rare Friday clash

By Ivan Saldajeno

BIÑAN--Stallion Laguna proved to no less than Rufo Sanchez that the winning tradition remains with or without him.

Laguna hacked out a huge 2-1 win against Sanchez and his current club Cebu at the Biñan Football Stadium in a rare Friday night PFL clash.

Terrence Linatoc and Jhan-Jhan Melliza delivered the goods for Laguna in the second half as the host squad stunned the visiting side despite a late scare.

Linatoc drew first blood right at the hour mark when Fitch Arboleda found him through a low cross and slotted the ball past Patrick Deyto.

Deyto then committed a huge blunder in the 85th minute when he, already out of his own box, dished out an errant pass to a Cebu teammate, which Melliza capitalized by picking the pass and kicking a rocket goal to the now wide open goal for the 2-0 count.

Sanchez did provide some scare for his former club as he put Cebu on the board just as the fourth official announced the added time.

Cebu even had a crack at forcing the draw at the death as the club was given a free kick from just outside the penalty spot, but Yu Hoshide's try hit the Laguna wall, and Ko Kyung-Joon saved the full three points by heading the ball out.

Laguna is now within four points of Marikina for fifth place and five of Negros for fourth place.

Cebu, on the other hand, failed to go past Makati for second place as the goal difference gap widened in favor of the latter.
